Kanye’s new track might be getting mixed reviews on the interwebs, but I’m personally a big fan. Production-wise, this feels like a throwback to the upbeat soul of College Dropout, and for some reason also reminds me of Mariah Carey’s “Always Be My Baby”. After a few years of senseless drama, auto-tune, and the ultimately disposable 808s and Heartbreak, I’m glad to see Yeezy going back to basics. And while Beyonce might be the big R & B draw here, Gap Band founder Charlie Wilson steals the show on the chorus. After hearing this track and “Power”, I can’t wait to hear what other surprises ‘Ye has in store for us this fall.

UPDATE: After talking to my friends Rich (disomnias) and Ryan, I need to make some retractions/clarifications. The beat on the new Kanye track (and “Power”) is great, but Yeezy’s rapping continues to get worse. Kanye spends half of his time talking about how great he is, and the other half making no sense whatsoever. I guess I’ve come to terms with the fact that Kanye’s going to make fantastic beats that he proceeds to spit verbal diarrhea over. Still, he sounded pretty great last year on Clipse’s “Kinda Like a Big Deal”. Here’s holding out on Kanye one last time:
